The Companion is a slim, hand-bound notebook designed to give your thoughts a clear, uninterrupted place to be.

With blank Tomoe River paper and no prescribed layout or system, it can become whatever you need it to be from a place for notes and ideas to a space for questions, sketches, or everyday thinking.

A simple physical tool, designed to help you slow down, pay attention and think without unnecessary distraction.

The Companion is deliberately minimal.

There are no lines, prompts or predetermined sections telling you how to use it. The lightweight Tomoe River paper, slim format and removable pages give you flexibility without adding unnecessary structure.

The materials are layered with textures that are subtle and unobtrusive. From the handmade Jute paper cover to the smoothness of the Tomoe River paper inside, each element is considered for how it feels and functions in use.

Whatever and however you need it.

Use it for everyday notes, ideas, lists, sketches, observations, brain dumps, planning or working through a problem.

Due to it’s flexibility pages can be taken out without leaving a mark. And when you are ready to move on the Kanmido Mini Index Markers can make it easy to close the chapter and start a new one without having to start a new notebook.

It means you can use it in a way that best suits your current needs and lifestyle.

Because your thoughts don't always follow a template.

Blank pages leave the direction up to you. You can write from the top, start in the middle, draw, make lists, change direction or combine different kinds of notes on the same page.

The Companion is designed to give you space to think, rather than prescribe how you should think.

There is no required method. And it is not made to be used perfectly.

You might dedicate a page to a single idea, keep running notes throughout the notebook, mark important pages, sketch alongside written thoughts, or just begin wherever feels right to you.

If you prefer structure, you can create your own using markers, tabs or colour coding. The difference is that the structure comes from you not the notebook.

The Companion combines several carefully selected materials:

• Paper: 52gsm Japanese Tomoe River cream paper (acid-free)

• Cover: Jute paper, handmade and hand-marbled by fair trade artisans in rural Bangladesh.

• Spine: Handmade Korean Hanji paper

• Inner cover: 100% recycled cardstock

Each Companion is hand-bound and finished individually.

We have tested dozens of papers and found Tomoe River paper to be exceptionally lightweight and smooth while providing an enjoyable writing surface for a wide range of pens and inks.

At 52gsm, it keeps the Companion remarkably thin and light without sacrificing the writing experience. Its ability to handle ink with minimal bleed-through and feathering makes it particularly well suited to a notebook designed for writing freely.

Tomoe River paper works beautifully with a wide range of pens and inks. Because the surface is exceptionally smooth, drying time is often more important than ink compatibility. Fine-tipped pens tend to dry more quickly and are a particularly comfortable choice for everyday writing.

The Companion works well with:

• Ballpoint pens - a simple, reliable choice for everyday writing.

• Fast-drying gel pens - smooth to write with while allowing you to get back to the page more quickly.

• Fountain pens - Tomoe River paper is well suited to fountain pens, from ultra-fine through to broad nibs. Wetter inks and broader nibs may require additional drying time.

• Kokuyo Mark+ 2 Tone Marker - our current highlighter is designed to reduce smearing over many rollerball and fountain pen inks.

• Pencils - the smooth surface of Tomoe River paper is best paired with a pencil with a slightly grippy graphite that won't slip across the page.

If you're using a particularly wet ink, broad fountain pen or slow-drying gel, simply allow a little extra time for the ink to dry before closing your Companion or writing on the reverse side.

No matter what writing tool you choose, we recommend testing them on the paper first.

We’re also currently working on introducing a selection of pens chosen specifically to complement the Companion writing experience.

The unique and unrepeatable design of the hand-marbled Jute paper used for the covers naturally varies in pattern, and colour.

These differences are not imperfections, they are part of what makes each Companion its own and only yours.

We selected stationery that complements the Companion's simple and flexible approach to writing yet aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.

Our current collection includes Kokuyo Mark+ 2 Tone Markers, Kanmido Mini Index Markers and PLUS Whiper Petit Correction Tape, each chosen for a practical reason; from adding subtle colour and structure to marking pages or making corrections.

You can use these individually or together to create your own way of organising and interacting with your Companion.
